The Optyse Lens-Free Ophthalmoscope is a unique, pocket-sized direct ophthalmoscope invented by retired UK surgeon Roger Armour and designed in collaboration with Team Consulting.

Its defining feature is that it completely eliminates the traditional internal focusing lens wheels and complex calibrations typically found in standard ophthalmoscopes. Instead, it uses the patient’s own cornea and crystalline lens to focus the illumination light, providing a clear, magnified view of the central fundus (the back of the eye).

Clinical evaluations and peer-reviewed studies published on PubMed have compared the Optyse to traditional direct ophthalmoscopes (such as Keeler or Welch Allyn scopes) with the following consensus:

Clarity of View: Standard ophthalmoscopes with internal lenses still provide a statistically superior grade of image clarity compared to the Optyse. However, the Optyse's view remains well within acceptable clinical limits.
Ease of Use: Studies involving medical students found that the Optyse is highly intuitive, providing an identical or slightly better ease-of-use experience for tasks like estimating the vertical cup-to-disc ratio (VCDR).
Observer Ametropia: The examiner’s own refractive errors (nearsightedness or farsightedness) do not negatively impact the clarity of the view through the device.
